Thai Pongal Statement

“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to offer my best wishes to our Tamil community for a happy and healthy Thai Pongal.

“Thai Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamils in Mississauga and in communities throughout the world. This marks an important occasion in the calendar year for Tamils. It is an opportunity to give thanks to nature for providing bountiful harvests, while at the same time acknowledging the promise and hope of new beginnings.

“This year’s Thai Pongal celebrations coincide with the first Tamil Heritage Month, which was proclaimed following the successful passage of the Tamil Heritage Month Act by the Ontario Provincial Parliament in 2014.

“Tamil Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember and reflect on the important economic, charitable and public service contributions that Tamil Canadians have made to communities like Mississauga.

“For all Mississaugans and Canadians, Tamil Heritage Month is also an opportunity to celebrate and educate future generations about the rich history and culture of the broader Tamil community.

“Let me once again wish everyone a very prosperous and memorable Thai Pongal.”
