Statement: Provincial Government Announces $4 Billion for Cities for COVID-19 Recovery
“Today is a good day for Mississauga as the province announced that cities will receive roughly $4 billion of Ontario’s $7 billion share of the Safe Restart Agreement, including $2 billion specifically for transit.
I want to thank the Premier and Prime Minister for working together, along with municipalities to land this historic deal. It recognizes that COVID-19 is not just a health crisis, it is an economic one crisis that will be felt in the months and years to come.
Cities have been hard hit by this pandemic. This funding will help cities ensure that we can continue to deliver the key services our residents rely on from transit to policing to childcare, road works and so much more.
Mississauga alone is projecting a $107 million revenue deficit for 2020. We have done our part as a City to mitigate costs, having identified $47 million in saving so far, but we still face a $60 million revenue deficit in 2020. We will still face some tough decisions as we plan our 2020 and 2021 budgets, but this deal will help us remain strong and allow us to continue to provide the essential services our residents and businesses need.
Once again, I want to thank the provincial and federal government for listening to the concerns of municipalities and responding with this much-needed relief.
I look forward to learning how much will be allocated to Mississauga as we embark on the road to recovery. A strong economic recovery will require strong cities. Today’s announcement is an important step to helping ensure cities can thrive in the months and years to come.”
