Statement on Eid al-Fitr: Mayor Crombie
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I join with our Muslim community to recognize Eid al-Fitr, which marks the Feast of the Breaking of the Fast and the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
“Eid al-Fitr is a time when all Muslims reflect on past blessings and further renew their commitment to their faith following a period of deeply meaningful sacrifice, reflection and enriching prayer.
“I offer my sincerest appreciation to local mosques for opening their doors and welcoming individuals, of different cultural backgrounds, to break bread during the many Iftar dinners that were held throughout Mississauga.
“In doing so, our broader community was afforded the opportunity to better understand the guiding principles and virtues of Islam and to recognize and further appreciate the diversity that enriches Mississauga each day.
“Next week we officially mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation and our nation’s founding.
“Canada’s cities and towns embody the very best of country – places where all people, no matter faith or ethnicity are safe, have dignity and can confidently participate in civic life; where residents are welcomed, invited and encouraged to share and celebrate their culture and faith for everyone to experience, appreciate and enjoy.
“I am proud to be the Mayor of a City that is home to an active, engaged and thoughtful Muslim community that works to strengthen the social fabric of all Mississauga neighbourhoods.
“Once again, on behalf of all Mississaugans, we offer our very best wishes to everyone celebrating Eid al-Fitr.
“Eid Mubarak!”
