STATEMENT: Mayor Responds to Province’s New Restrictions on Restaurants, Banquet Halls and Gyms in Peel Region

“Today, the province made the difficult decision to impose additional restrictions on bars and restaurants, fitness centres, gyms, banquet halls and event facilities in Peel Region, Toronto and Ottawa. While many of these measures were already in place here in Mississauga, today’s announcement slightly tightens gathering rules in our indoor spaces.

While I don’t want to see businesses in Mississauga negatively impacted, the GTA continues to account for roughly three-quarters of all cases in the province. Further measures must be taken now to reduce the severity of a second wave across the province.

In Peel, we are not experiencing a massive surge in cases at this time. Our averages have remained steady with 75 to 100 cases a day since the start September, meaning that we are not yet in a second wave. However, we know this can change at any moment. I ask that residents and businesses continue to work together to reduce the severity of a second wave in the weeks and months to come.

It is time to consider shrinking your bubbles to the most essential people in your lives. Whether that is the people you live or work with – please, keep it as small as possible. Only we can move this virus, and only we can stop it. A small investment now will have big returns in the future.

I want to thank businesses for their patience and understanding since the onset of this pandemic. We are committed to working with you to ensure that you can continue to thrive through these challenging times.”
