“I am pleased that both the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, Kathleen Wynne and the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, Doug Ford have committed, if elected as Premier, to fully fund and build the Hurontario Rapid Light Transit (LRT) system.
With nearly 800,000 residents, Mississauga has become a city in demand.
To continue to grow and prosper, we need to build new transit networks that move people quickly and efficiently across our City and our region. Completing the 22 stops, 20 kilometres, Hurontario LRT is a priority for our city and will help connect Mississauga residents to the wider GTA. There is broad public support for the Hurontario LRT, with Metrolinx recently releasing public opinion polling demonstrating that 85% of people in the local area support the project.
Raising awareness about the need for regionally-connected rapid transit is one of our City’s main priorities in our provincial election advocacy campaign Mississauga Matters.
This campaign was launched today and aims to put our City’s top priorities – transit, infrastructure and affordable housing for middle-income residents – at the top of the agenda for all provincial candidates.
A fully-funded Hurontario LRT is a critical component of this campaign, and I am pleased to see that both Kathleen Wynne and Doug Ford recognize its importance and are committed to fully-funding it and getting shovels in the ground.
I look forward to receiving a similar commitment from Andrea Horwath, the leader of the NDP and Mike Schreiner, the leader of the Green Party.”
