STATEMENT: Mayor Crombie Responds to First Confirmed Case of Novel Coronavirus (COV-VID-19) in Mississauga
“Peel Public Health has confirmed the first case of novel coronavirus in Mississauga. The infected individual sought medical treatment at Trillium Health Partners and is well. They were discharged home to recover and are currently in self-isolation.
At this time, the focus is on limiting the further spread of infection, identifying those who may have had contact with the infected individual while ensuring the protection of our front-line health care workers. Peel Public Health has launched an investigation to identify potential sites of exposure within our community and any individuals who may have come in close contact with this person.
Peel Public Health is ready and prepared to respond to cases of novel coronavirus, working closely in partnership with Trillium Health Partners, Peel Paramedics, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and health care providers to ensure the necessary emergency planning, monitoring and response protocols are in place.
Toronto Pearson International Airport is also working closely with Health Canada and the Canadian Border Services Agencies to ensure the proper safety measures, including additional screening measures at the airport to protect both passengers and staff.
If you develop symptoms of the novel coronavirus, please self-isolate and contact Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700. If you require immediate medical attention, please call 911 and advise the operator of your symptoms.

Given the growing global nature and spread of this virus, residents are understandably concerned. I share those concerns and want to assure them that our medical professionals and first responders are working in unison, 24/7 to protect Peel and limit the spread of the virus. The risk of transmission to the public continues to remain low.
