STATEMENT: Mayor Bonnie Crombie Responds to Further Adjustments to Public Health Measures in the Province’s Grey Zone

“I am very pleased that the Government of Ontario has made several adjustments to public health measures in the Grey zone, which I firmly believe will have a positive impact on the mental, physical and financial health of many people in Mississauga.

Starting on Monday, March 29, outdoor fitness classes, team training and personal training will be permitted in Grey zone regions, including Peel.

This is something I have been strongly advocating for and I thank the Province for listening and making these important changes.

The prolonged lockdown has taken an immense toll on so many in our community, and I am very hopeful that more outdoor fitness options will have an immediate, positive impact on people’s health.

I am also encouraged that personal care service providers will be able to open up, with strict capacity limits, on April 12. These businesses have been among the hardest hit during COVID-19, with so many having to close permanently. Many personal care service providers are operated by women in our community, and data shows that the pandemic has disproportionally affected women. Allowing these businesses to reopen safely is an important step in helping many of our business owners get back on track.

The Province also adjusted capacity limits on outdoor weddings, funerals, and religious services, rites or ceremonies, now allowing for any number of individuals as long as two metres of physical distance can be maintained, also beginning on Monday, March 29.

I am confident that if the proper safety and health precautions are followed, the risk of all these activities can be mitigated. I encourage all residents and business owners to familiarize themselves with the new changes.

COVID-19 case counts are increasing across Ontario, so it is critical that we all remain cautious as we reopen parts of our economy and our community. Residents and businesses must continue following all public health guidelines.

The reality is that the race between the more transmissible variants of concern and the vaccines has never been tighter. I encourage all residents that are eligible for the vaccine to get their shot as soon as possible – this is the best way for you to protect yourself, your loved ones and help our community get out of lockdown.

I once again urge the Province to allot Mississauga and all of Peel Region the amount of vaccines proportionate to our needs. Along with Toronto, Peel has been in lockdown longer than any other region in North America.

Brighter days are ahead Mississauga. Please stay safe.”
