Statement by Mayor Bonnie Crombie Marking India Independence Day

“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I proudly join with local Indian families to commemorate the 68th Annual India Independence Day, a celebration of India’s sovereignty.

“Mississauga has an important relationship with India. We have an active, engaged and thoughtful Indian population which continues to invest back in our City as committed public servants, renowned academics, compassionate volunteers, and successful business owners.

“Mississauga is home to a number of Indian-based businesses that are an important part of our City’s leading industry sectors.

“Since becoming mayor, I have worked to strengthen relations between Mississauga with Indian thought leaders. In June, City Council formally welcomed India Consul General Akhilesh Mishra to the City of Mississauga, for his first official visit with us.

“Our shared interests, values and priorities are equally linked by a shared understanding and appreciation for culture and the arts.

“Mississauga’s Celebration Square, our City’s leading gathering place, is a popular venue to hold Indian cultural events. During these festivities residents from Mississauga, and throughout the Greater Toronto Area, gather to enjoy the lasting cultural contributions, genres and famous performing artists inspired by India.

“From dance, music, cinema, comedy and television, a growing appreciation for Bollywood continues to bring cultures together. The City of Mississauga is honoured to play host to many of these events.

“Once again, I join with Mississauga’s Indian community to mark India Independence Day. It is my hope that the bond between Mississauga and Indian communities grows even stronger.”
