Statement Marking Hazel McCallion’s FCM Honour Roll Induction
The following statement is from Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie making the formal induction of Hazel McCallion into the honour roll of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) which took place on Sunday June 4th during the 2017 FCM Annual Conference and Trade Show:
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to congratulate former Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, on being inducted into the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) honour roll.
“Hazel McCallion has rightly earned this national distinction. People in communities across Canada continue to celebrate her enduring legacy as a respected, determined and unwavering public servant, who always put the public first.
“City-building is nation-building. If Sir John A. Macdonald laid the cornerstone for Confederation, Hazel McCallion built on the foundation, working closely with organizations like FCM, federal cabinet ministers and prime ministers, to ensure local issues always took priority on the national agenda.
“If there is one person who can bring people together, break political gridlock and make government work, it’s Hazel McCallion.
“Former mayor McCallion is revered as Hurricane Hazel for a reason. She is a force of nature; a larger than life individual; an accomplished municipal leader.
“During Hazel McCallion’s tenure, Mississauga grew from farm fields and fruit trees, into a vibrant, prosperous and thriving place so many Canadians continue to choose for a better, more promising life.
“Looking back on Hazel McCallion’s unprecedented 36 years as mayor, it is hard to imagine all the lives she has touched, all the people she has inspired, and all the families she has welcomed to our community, and to their new home, Mississauga.
“Let me recognize the team and leadership from FCM for bringing cities and towns together to remember and celebrate the lasting legacy and work of Mississauga’s Hazel McCallion.”
