GTHA Mayors and Chairs commit to cooperation on COVID-19 resurgence preparation
“Today, Mayors and Chairs from the 11 largest municipal governments across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area met to discuss their ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mayors and Chairs agreed that they are seeing fairly good compliance with their masking by-laws/orders, and other health regulations put in place at areas of concern, such as restaurants and gyms.
So far, all the municipalities have seen good compliance with public health regulations at these establishments and very little reported non-compliance or virus transmission linked to our bars and restaurants.
We also shared concerns we all have about some of the severe challenges being experienced in particular by small businesses in all of our cities and regions and discussed ways in which governments will likely have to continue to help if those businesses are to be in a position to go forward.
All Mayors and Chairs committed to working together to support the provincial government and local school boards as children return to school in September.
The Mayors and Chairs committed to making sure all public health units continue the good cooperation we have seen throughout the pandemic as we prepare for a possible resurgence or second wave of COVID-19. They will also be sharing resurgence plans between municipalities to ensure a coordinated response across the region.
Working together to fight COVID-19 has helped us reduce the spread of the virus and save lives. We know that this continued cooperation will help fight COVID-19 as we restart the GTHA economy and more and more people go back to work.”
