Statement: Closure of Local Businesses to Manage Spread of COVID-19

“In an effort to flatten the curve and prevent the further spread of the virus, Peel Public Health advises bars, restaurants and food establishments to stop in-person service and move exclusively to take-out food service as soon as possible and no later than midnight tonight. Peel Public Health also strongly recommends the closure of nightclubs, movie theatres and concert venues as soon as possible.

This is a big decision. It’s not one that we take lightly, but it’s the right decision.

I think we have all seen based on the federal’s governments response today that unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures.

This is not a complete shutdown for restaurants. Take-out and mobile ordering will still be available.

While we recognize this will have an impact on local businesses, the need to protect the spread of this virus in our City is our number one priority.

I want to encourage people to please support our local business community by ordering take-out or mobile ordering from your favourite restaurant and consider buying gift certificates to local restaurants and movie theatres that can be used at a later date.

I’d like to commend our local business community for their commitment to limiting the spread of COVID-19. They have taken this public health issue very seriously, and I want to thank them for working in partnership with Peel Public Health.

Our goal is first and foremost to keep our City and our residents healthy and safe and reduce the further spread of this virus.”
