Statement by Mayor Crombie on New Federal and Provincial Infrastructure Funding
For Immediate Release
March 14, 2018
“For cities like Mississauga to break gridlock, get people moving, attract new investment, create jobs and improve our quality of life, we must work together with the province and federal government to build the infrastructure our communities need to drive our economy forward.
“Today, Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Amarjeet Sohi and Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarelli, chose Mississauga as the venue to sign a historic, ten-year $11.8 billion bilateral infrastructure agreement. This dedicated, long-term funding will make a real difference in communities like Mississauga because it will help us build and maintain the strong network of roads, bridges, public transit and green infrastructure we need to power our provincial and national economies.
“Today’s investment will see over $800 million in dedicated funds – including matching funds from the province and the City of Mississauga – flow to the City of Mississauga over the next decade. This is good news for our community, our residents, and our future growth as a city. Mississauga is home to almost 800,000 residents from every country, and over 88,000 businesses. We are a city in demand and a place where the world comes to work. High-quality infrastructure allows us to compete on a global stage, attract new business, and most importantly, create jobs for our residents.
“Cities like Mississauga are important partners who will deliver these federal and provincial dollars where they are needed most. We know what the priorities our residents are and we know what needs to be built to keep Mississauga moving forward.
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga, I would like to thank the provincial and federal governments for choosing Mississauga for today’s historic announcement and for their unprecedented investments in our infrastructure. Today’s investment will help get Mississauga moving and demonstrates what can be achieved when all levels of government work together.
From historic investments in infrastructure to doubling the gas tax and fully funding the Hurontario LRT, we are working together to improve the lives of our residents while growing our economy and transforming Mississauga into a world-class city.”
