Statement by Mayor Crombie: Lakeview Development
The following is a statement by Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie following the announcement by Finance Minister and Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa that the provincial government will invest $450,000 toward the revitalization of the Lakeview lands located in southeastern Mississauga:
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to welcome Finance Minister and Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa here to City Hall.
“I would like to also welcome to City Hall the active, engaged, and thoughtful Lakeview ratepayers and residents; and all those who have been actively involved in the future planning of the Lakeview lands.
“I consider all of you members of Jim Tovey’s extended family!
“Finally, I would like to recognize the tremendous staff from the City of Mississauga for your year-round professionalism to develop this important city-building vision.
“Last January City Manager Janice Baker and I attended a pre-budget consultation at the Living Arts Centre hosted by Minister Sousa.
“By meeting with us in our community, this better allowed Mississauga businesses; stakeholders; charitable groups; and residents; the opportunity to present their ideas in preparation for the 2015 Ontario budget.
“It was an opportunity for us to discuss directly with the Minister, and Ministry of Finance officials, long-held Council priorities.
“As part of the City’s presentation we discussed our desire to secure provincial funding to build the Hurontario-Main light rail transit (LRT) plan.
“Two weeks ago, Minister Sousa, Transportation Minister Del Duca and our Mississauga MPPs all made history by announcing $1.6 billion in full funding for the Hurontario-Main Light LRT.
“It’s the largest infrastructure project in Mississauga’s history. And we could not have done it without our provincial partners.
“During that same pre-budget consultation meeting, we discussed Council’s vision to move forward with the Inspiration Lakeview Master Plan.
“Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey has done tremendous work to make this plan a reality. The work Councillor Tovey has done has been exemplary. He has driven this project with unrivalled passion and it is because of his drive and determination that we are here today.
“The Lakeview community is nestled in Minister Sousa’s Mississauga South constituency.
“Minister, I know you understand that the Lakeview neighbourhood has unrivalled potential to be transformed into a world-class destination to raise a family, open a business, and enjoy new recreational opportunities.
“This $450,000 funding announcement by the provincial government is a tremendous investment that will help the City of Mississauga move forward with our Inspiration Lakeview Master Plan, which will further unleash the potential of our waterfront.
“This is another example of the City of Mississauga partnering with Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government to achieve real results for residents.
“Working together we are building up Lakeview, Mississauga, and all of Ontario.”
