Over the last few days, Mississauga and the GTA experienced its first real snowstorm. It might have been our first snowstorm, but it certainly will not be our last!
Now is a good time to remind residents about the steps Council and staff take to ensure neighbourhoods are salted and ploughed and residents are kept informed.
During the winter months, The Mississauga Roads App can be used to track the locations of snowploughs and see when a street was last ploughed. Residents can also access relevant Twitter feeds to keep up to date on any road related issues or events occurring.
This app also lets users see on a map road construction projects happening throughout the city. The alerts section provides details about road work. The app includes links to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation traffic cameras on major 400-series highways. The cameras show real-time updates of traffic conditions.
The app is compatible with a variety of different smartphones, free to download from Apple iTunes and Google Play. I encourage you to get it today!
Following a big snowfall my office gets plenty of emails asking about snow clearing. Mississauga’s winter maintenance crews clear City roads, priority sidewalks, bus stops and pedestrian crossings within 12-36 hours after the end of a snowstorm. Back to back storms will extend this timing. Local or residential streets are ploughed after priority roads are clear. The City’s first priority is safety and access to emergency vehicles and transit.
I also want to single out all residents for being good neighbours and for helping elderly and disabled individuals clear snow from their properties over the past few days. Your help is no small gesture and it makes a big difference. When you help shovel and clear ice, you’re ensuring residents can get to a medical appointment, school and to work.
