“Once again, residents of Mississauga rose to the challenge issued by Mayor Bonnie Crombie to provide healthy, nutritious food for their hungry neighbours through this Thanksgiving season.
With goals of raising $315,000 and 250,000 pounds of food by October 20, Mayor Crombie challenged community members to participate in her annual One Bag Challenge in support of The Mississauga Food Bank. The food and funds raised by this annual campaign provide healthy, nutritious food to children, families, seniors, and other neighbours across Mississauga who are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living.
“I’m proud that we have once again not only met but exceeded our campaign goals, raising $316,074 and 266,752 pounds of food. Thanks to the generosity of our residents, community groups, and business community, our city-wide food drive continues to reach more need residents every year,” said Mayor Crombie. “Mississauga has once again demonstrated that we are truly a city that cares. We must continue to work together to alleviate hunger and address the root causes of poverty in our city.”
The success of this year’s campaign brings the total amount that Mayor Crombie’s One Bag Challenge has raised to over $1.3 million and 1.25 million pounds of food over the last five years.
“As we work to realize our vision of a Mississauga where no one goes hungry, we rely on the support of our community,” says Meghan Nicholls, Executive Director of The Mississauga Food Bank. “As a growing number of Mississauga residents are turning to food banks for assistance, we are thankful for Mayor Crombie’s tireless efforts to champion this campaign and overwhelmed by our city’s outpouring of generosity.”
The Mississauga Food Bank is in need of donations of food and funds year round. For more information about donating, volunteering, or the Food Bank’s impact in the community, please visit www.themississaugafoodbank.org.”
