National Flag of Canada Day Statement by Mayor Crombie

“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I join with all residents to celebrate National Flag of Canada Day.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of when the Maple Leaf was formally adopted as Canada’s National Flag. This occasion remains an important milestone for our nation, our sovereign identity, and our people.

“Today, the Maple Leaf is recognized as a welcomed symbol embodying the values of peace; respect; honour; sacrifice; strength; and compassion. Our National Flag proudly flies at Mississauga’s Civic Centre and at town and city halls in communities across Canada.

“Whether your family can trace its ancestry back prior to Confederation, or whether you are a new Canadian who chose Mississauga and Canada for a better life, the Maple Leaf is an extension of our Canadian identity

“Finally I encourage all residents to participate in the “Share your Moment with the Flag” challenge – a national effort calling on all Canadians to share a picture or video with the Canadian flag using the hashtag #flag50.”
