Mayor Crombie’s Statement on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Mayor Bonnie Crombie issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

“Violence against women is an ongoing issue that effects us all. International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women serves as a reminder that despite the progress we have made, there is still lots of work to be done to achieve full and substantive gender equality. We must reaffirm our commitment to the ongoing work for gender equality everywhere.

“Half of all women in Canada having experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. This is unacceptable.

“The number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada is disproportionately high. We must do more to ensure the safety of our women and girls in all our communities.

“We must recommit ourselves to raising awareness of and taking action to eliminate gender-based violence against all women. I encourage all of you to reflect on actions we can all take in our daily lives to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

“We must stand together to demonstrate that violence against women will never be tolerated.”
