Mayor Crombie’s Statement Marking Republic Day of Portugal
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I join with residents of Portuguese descent to commemorate the 105th Implantação da República – Republic Day of Portugal.
“Beginning in the 1950s, Portuguese families, predominantly from the islands of Azores and Madeira, began to settle in places like Lakeview, with the unwavering goal to build a better life, pursue their dreams, and to give back to their new community.
“Today, Mississauga is now proudly home to places like the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Streetsville and Cristo Rei Roman Catholic Parish, among many others, which serve as important gathering places for our Portuguese families to celebrate their rich heritage and culture.
“Mississauga’s Portuguese community continues to make important and lasting contributions toward the well-being of our entire City, and I would like to once again offer my best wishes to them on this notable occasion.”
