Mayor Crombie’s Statement Marking Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I join with our active, engaged and thoughtful Sikh community to mark the celebrated occasion of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
“Born in 1469, Guru Nanak Dev Ji inspired, and continues to inspire, generations of men and women to dedicate themselves to the Sikh virtues of kindness, peace, and compassion.
“These principles can be found in communities across Canada, and especially here in Mississauga.
“Mississauga is home to the Sikh Heritage Museum. I encourage residents, of all backgrounds, to visit this museum, as I have, and to experience the wealth of history and sacred literature, which exemplify the Sikh faith.
“This year, Canada also celebrated an important milestone with the 150th anniversary of Confederation and our nation’s founding. Canada continues to be enriched by the lasting nation-building contributions of Canada’s Sikh population. To celebrate Canada is to celebrate the diversity of Canadians.
“Through inclusion, tolerance, and respect for all cultures and faiths, Mississauga will continue to be an inspiration to other communities.”
