Mayor Crombie’s Pope John Paul II Day Statement
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I join with all residents to commemorate Pope John Paul II Day being celebrated in communities across Canada.
“Mississauga is home to a thriving Catholic community, and a number of active and engaged Catholic parishes that invest back in our City through charitable and social justice undertakings. In doing so, these faith communities continue to carry on the legacy and work of Pope Saint John Paul II.
“For Mississaugans of Polish descent, John Paul II’s time as head of the Roman Catholic Church continues to be fondly remembered and cherished. Mississauga is home to the John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre – a gathering place to celebrate Polish culture year round.
“During his tenure, Pope John Paul II was recognized for his influential diplomacy and global travels, which brought him to Toronto for World Youth Day in 2002. Mississauga and cities throughout the Greater Toronto Area became home for thousands of pilgrims who descended from around the world to be part of these festivities.
“Pope John Paul II’s personal motto was “totally yours”. These two words speak volumes about his unbreakable faith and unwavering commitment to serving the greater good.”
