Mayor Crombie Welcomes Throne Speech 2016
The following is a statement by Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie following the release of the Wynne Government’s 2016 Throne Speech and the opening of the second session of the 41st Parliament:
“In this Throne Speech the Wynne government once again has committed itself to building new and upgrading existing transportation infrastructure, which is essential to improve the quality of life for the people of all Ontario communities.
“Mississauga was singled out in the Throne Speech, with the government’s re-commitment to press ahead and build the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. The LRT is the single largest infrastructure investment in Mississauga’s history.
“Mississauga’s population is growing. We are planning new intensified developments. The LRT will help us achieve this. The LRT will reduce traffic gridlock. It will create jobs and generate economic development. It will elevate the quality of life for residents. It will unleash the potential of our downtown core.
“The commitment to transform the GO system with Regional Express Rail will improve the daily commute for Mississaugans in all corners of our city and all points in between. Strengthening the GO system runs parallel with Mississauga’s efforts to bring all-day, two-way, GO train service on the Milton and Kitchener lines.
“Finally, as we look toward this new session of Parliament I want to acknowledge my colleague, Mississauga-Brampton South MPP Amrit Mangat, who will reintroduce her bill to proclaim February 14th as Hazel McCallion Day – an opportunity for all Ontarians to celebrate the legendary city-builder, Hazel McCallion.
“I applaud Premier Wynne and her government’s steadfast commitment to invest in cities, like Mississauga, by building modern transit and infrastructure to create jobs and grow Ontario’s economy.”
