Mayor Crombie Marks Pope John Paul II Day 2017
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Council, we join with all residents to commemorate Pope John Paul II Day.
“Mississauga is home to a thriving Catholic community and compassionate Catholic churches that give back to our City through works of charity, social justice and support for our most vulnerable neighbours.
“These faith communities continue to carry on the legacy and work of Pope Saint John Paul II.
“For residents of Polish heritage, Pope Saint John Paul II’s tenure as Holy Father and head of the Roman Catholic Church is fondly remembered and cherished.
“Mississauga is home to 50,000 residents of Polish descent. The John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre, located in our community, is an important gathering place to celebrate Polish culture year round.
“Beatified in 2011, Pope Saint John Paul II was recognized as a global statesman undertaking exhaustive international missionary work, which included travels to Toronto for a historic World Youth Day in 2002. John Paul II once famously said the “the future starts today, not tomorrow.” His words were a call to action to all people of all ages to bring about positive, lasting change.
“Pope John Paul II’s personal motto was “totally yours”. These two words speak volumes about his unbreakable faith and unwavering commitment to serving the greater good.”
