Mayor Crombie Marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2017
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, we join with communities from around the world to solemnly mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
“We remember and reflect on the unthinkable crimes and atrocities that took place during the Holocaust. More than six million Jews were murdered.
“Nazis torched synagogues; vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses. Innocent Jewish families were torn apart. Men and women were arrested and sent to concentration camps to die.
“It is unthinkable to comprehend the lasting devastation of the Holocaust. There are Holocaust survivors still alive and they continue to be haunted by their experiences.
“We must always remember that when good people remain silent and look the other way, racism flourishes.
“On this day, let us all draw strength from the worlds of St. Maximillian Kolbe, a Polish priest who died in Auschwitz.
“Father Kolbe said ‘a single act of love makes the soul return to life.’ Father Kolbe’s words are a call to action. Each one of us must lead by example in our daily lives.
“Through the power of education, peace, tolerance, volunteerism and self-confidence, we can all do our part to make sure the crimes of the past are not repeated.
“On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the survivors and their families.”
