Mayor Crombie Announces Youth Employment Expo, New Youth Initiatives
Mississauga – I am honoured to accept the Healthy City Stewardship Centre’s (HCSC) report on the status of youth employment in Mississauga entitled – Unlocking Potential: Empowering Our Youth Through Employment, Mayor Bonnie Crombie said today at the Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre.
“What we have before us is a made-in-Mississauga action plan – a blueprint to help young people reach higher and for them to be active, engaged and complete citizens,” Mayor Crombie added.
HCSC is a volunteer initiative that brings together key decision-making organizations in Mississauga and Peel Region to work proactively and collaboratively toward the betterment of the health of the people of Mississauga.
“The report identifies 10 leading barriers to youth employment,” Mayor Crombie said. “Although, any barrier is discouraging I am pleased by the research detailed in this report because it validates the efforts and initiatives my office, City of Mississauga and other organizations have undertaken to support local youth. We’re on the right track, but we must do more.”
Mayor Crombie used the report presentation to formally announce the inaugural “Mayor’s Youth Employment Expo.” This free Expo will take place on Sunday June 12th from 11AM to 3PM at City Hall. Please register at www.youthjobexpo.ca.
“Our goal is simple – creating mutually beneficial connections between talented youth in search of employment and local community builders in need of talented youth.”
Youth job seekers will have the opportunity to explore employment and volunteer opportunities, network with local employers and improve resume writing and interview skills. “Don’t forget to bring your resume.”
Some of the following private and public-sector organizations have agreed to participate, including: YMCA, Plaza Premium Group, Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Services, Fire & Emergency Services, FDS Broker Services, and Peel Police.

Mayor Crombie also highlighted the first Mayor’s Youth Speaker Series – “an ongoing series of keynote discussions with prominent Canadians from a variety of sectors aimed at inspiring youth in Mississauga and providing them with guidance as they prepare to enter the workforce.”
The first event featured a keynote and Q&A session with award-winning journalist Amanda Lang of Bloomberg News, Crombie said, adding that “it was a tremendous evening filled with important networking and thoughtful discussions.”
Mayor Crombie also “thanked the Wynne government who have committed a funding grant of over $750,000 provided through Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Youth Opportunities Fund to support the recommendations laid out in the HCSC report. This funding will turn ideas into results.”
“An important way for our young people to better themselves and to achieve healthy more prosperous lives, is by having the discipline, self-confidence and physical and mental drive that all comes with the responsibilities and pride of having a job,” Mayor Crombie concluded.
