Mayor Bonnie Crombie’s Statement Marking Labour Day 2017
“On Labour Day, it is important for all of us to reflect upon the sacrifices made by men and women of Canada’s labour movement and their historic struggle for workers’ rights.
“As Labour Day 2017 coincides with the 150th anniversary of Confederation and our nation’s founding, let us celebrate the lasting hard work, determination and commitment demonstrated by men and women who built up cities, towns and communities across our country and shaped our nation’s future for the better.
“For over 100 years we have had the privilege to commemorate Labour Day as an achievement for the struggle for fair wages, standard working hours, a safe and healthy work environment, and most importantly, the rights and respect of all workers.
“We extend our sincerest appreciation to the Canadian labour movement for their tireless efforts to give us the workplace we have all come to expect – and for all they have done to make our society and our economy stronger.
“Council and staff remain committed to ensuring that the City of Mississauga remains one of the top employers in Canada, respecting, supporting and mentoring all employees by providing safe and professional environments.
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I wish all residents a safe, happy and memorable Labour Day.”
