Legends Row Ceremony Remarks by Mayor Crombie
“Good afternoon, everyone.
“Welcome to City Hall for this most celebrated occasion.
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council – I would like to recognize the six highly accomplished individuals we are paying tribute to today.
“I would also like to acknowledge the families, friends and loved ones of today’s recipients. Thank you for also being with us.
“Legends Row is Mississauga’s Walk of Fame.
“Each year, we honour men and women – of different professions and callings – who have brought spirit and pride to our community.
“For many of today’s inductees, their contributions have not only made positive, important and lasting differences in Mississauga – but their accomplishments have also touched communities across Canada and around the world.
“Today we honour the following individuals:
“Laurie Pallet – for her unwavering contributions to promote Mississauga’s arts and culture scene, and for enriching the lives of talented local artists;
“Sandy Hawley – for his accomplished 31 years as a jockey. As one of Canada’s most prominent athletes Sandy was also awarded the Order of Canada;
“Elliott Kerr – for his successful career as a businessman. Elliott has used his passion for sports and athleticism to invest back in Mississauga. Most notably, Elliott brought the immensely popular Mississauga Marathon to our City;
“The late George Hunter – George was an accomplished Canadian documentary photographer. George’s work was seen throughout the world, and featured in prominent publications like Time Magazine;
“Don Cherry – I don’t think Don needs an introduction! He’s a celebrated national figure, who has made a local difference. Don was responsible for bringing an OHL Jr. “A” hockey franchise to Mississauga in 1998 called the Mississauga IceDogs; and
“Today we honour, the late Harold G. Shipp, whom our City lost last September.
“While all recipients are special, Mr. Shipp’s induction touches me personally. I was honoured to nominate Mr. Shipp to receive this prestigious distinction.
“Mr. Shipp quite literally built this City and was its champion for over 70 years, bringing us great renown and turning Mississauga from a bedroom community into the 6th largest city in the country.
“Mr. Shipp was a philanthropist of the highest order, donating $6 million to Trillium Hospital in 2005 and encouraging many others to follow his lead.
“He was also a regular contributor to many local charities and worthwhile causes.
“Although, Mr. Shipp is no longer with us, his timeless contributions to Mississauga are ever present.
“In closing, I would like to single out the ongoing efforts of Ron Duquette; the board of directors; and the Legends Row community partners for their year-round organizing commitment. You made today possible. Thank you.
“Let me once again recognize all recipients, and their families, on receiving this distinguished honour.
“Your contributions will be enshrined in our Legends Row, for all Mississaugans to learn about, appreciate, and celebrate.
“Thank you.”
