Although, I am disappointed the outcome of the recent Brampton Council vote, Mississauga remains committed to working with the Wynne government to build the Mississauga portion of this light rail transit (LRT) plan.

Last April, Transportation Minister Del Duca announced the Hurontario-Main LRT will receive full funding, amounting to $1.6 billion dollars. This is the largest infrastructure investment in Mississauga’s history.

This unprecedented public transit investment by the Wynne government is a game changer for Mississauga. Our City remains committed to moving forward and getting the job done.

Mississauga has already funded our share of $15.4 million toward planning studies; an environmental assessment; and preliminary design work. Our 10 year capital plan includes a total of $25 million to help get shovels in the ground and work underway.

Metrolinx and Minister Del Duca have committed to building the LRT to Steeles Avenue if Brampton decided not to proceed further. This includes 19 LRT stops in Mississauga.

Mississauga Councillors and our City’s corporate Leadership Team will work with the provincial government and Metrolinx to identify next steps to press ahead with constructing a full service LRT on Hurontario.

The LRT will transform how Mississauga moves, grows, and thrives. This new transit plan will create jobs, generate new economic development opportunities, and strengthen our local economy.

We remain equally committed to doing our part to build integrated transit that connects people, businesses and cities throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

As part of our efforts, on Monday November 9th, we will host our first-ever transportation summit – Mississauga Moves 2015.

You are encouraged to register and attend. Participants will join local and international experts and take part in interactive workshops and presentations.

Your ideas will be captured. They will be used to help draft a comprehensive Transportation Master Plan. This plan will be our roadmap to ensure we set – and achieve – our future transit needs.
