Canada Day Statement: Mayor Crombie

“This year marks the 148th anniversary of our country’s founding. This is an important milestone in our nation’s proud history, as we continue on the path to commemorate Canada’s historic sesquicentennial celebrations in 2017.

“Since Confederation, Canada has grown to become a globally-respected country that safeguards and embodies the unwavering values of peace, respect for the rule of law and democratic participation, at home, and in peace keeping efforts undertaken around the world.

“This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir John A. Macdonald, a father of Confederation, and our country’s first prime minister. Sir John A’s vision, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to bring about national unity helped forge towns and cities across Canada, and our national identity.

“In 2015, we also commemorate the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the red maple leaf as our national flag, inspired by the leadership of another prime minister and nation builder, Lester B. Pearson.

“Today, Canada’s national flag has become a celebrated symbol that our brave soldiers and Veterans; professional diplomats and international humanitarian workers; and all Canadians, all wear.

“In a few short days we will welcome the world to Mississauga for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am & Parapan Am Games. Join me in cheering on the professional coaches and athletes from Team Canada, who will proudly display the Canadian flag during this international competition. They have trained their entire lives for this moment. All of Canada is with you!

“On this day let us remember and reflect on how truly blessed we are to call Canada home. Ours is a nation home to communities that invite and encourage people, of all backgrounds, to earn an education, raise a family, start a business, and pursue their dreams to the fullest.

“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to wish everyone a very memorable, enriching and happy Canada Day!”
