Canada Day Statement: Mayor Crombie
“This year marks the 149th anniversary of our country’s founding. This is an important milestone in our nation’s proud history, as we continue on the path to commemorate Canada’s historic sesquicentennial celebrations in 2017.
“Since our founding in 1867, Canada has grown to become a globally-respected country that safeguards and embodies the unwavering values of peace, order, and democracy –at home, and in peace keeping efforts undertaken around the world.
“Canada is, without question, a leading destination people choose to raise families, earn an education, and start a business. People choose Canada to reach higher in their lives and to ensure that their children have a more promising future.
“On this day let us remember and reflect on how truly blessed we are to call Canada home. Ours is a nation home to communities that invite and encourage people, of all backgrounds, to earn an education, raise a family, start a business, and pursue their dreams to the fullest.
“This brings me to the events of the past week. A few days ago, Mississauga was rocked by a house explosion. In the wake of uncertainty, our community came together to support those in need. The compassion of our residents and community organizations was incredible.
“I want to thank the tremendous first responders who have worked around the clock to help restore order to the neighbourhood. The actions of the past few days demonstrate what it means to be Canadian – compassion toward helping those in need.
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to wish everyone a very memorable, enriching and happy Canada Day!”
