Mayor’s Youth Speaker Series Launches With Keynote From Renowned Journalist Amanda Lang: Crombie
Mississauga, ON – Mayor Crombie today announced the launch of the Mayor’s Youth Speaker Series, an ongoing series of keynote discussions with prominent Canadians from a variety of sectors aimed at inspiring youth in Mississauga and providing them with guidance as they prepare to enter the workforce. The first event will feature a keynote and Q&A session with award-winning journalist Amanda Lang of Bloomberg News.
“As an accomplished business journalist who has interviewed successful entrepreneurs, business executives and world leaders, Amanda Lang is in a unique position to provide insight both on her own success and the success of others, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said today. Attendees will hear a keynote session with Ms. Lang and will then have the opportunity to ask questions of relevance to them as they prepare to enter the workforce”
Amanda Lang said “Let me thank Mayor Crombie for the opportunity to launch this city-wide initiative to inspire, motivate and help guide young Mississaugans to get their promising careers off and running, so that they can take on the world and succeed.
“Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, and there are few things more important than helping them achieve their dreams, through hard work, determination and creativity. I look forward to being inspired by what they have to offer.”
The inaugural event will take place on Monday, January 25, 2016 at Central Library – Noel Ryan Auditorium – 301 Burnhamthorpe Road West from 7PM – 9 PM. Space is limited to attendees 14-25 years of age and registration is mandatory at www.youthspeakerseries.ca.
“Upon being elected to office, I committed to four key areas of focus, one of which was youth unemployment, Mayor Crombie said, citing that “a staggering 14% of youth aged 15-24 are unemployed.”
Many of these youth face multiple barriers including slow-job growth economies, low-quality jobs, skills mismatch and social discrimination, among others. Research has shown that a strong network and connection to mentors can open doors for youth as they transition into the workforce. These role models provide important support both in navigating the job market as well as helping youth understand the skills and experience required to succeed.”
Mayor Crombie concluded “I am determined to combat these issues, in part with the launch of the Mayor’s Youth Speakers Series – an initiative intended to engage, inspire and provide youth with the opportunity to hear from industry leaders on their struggles and success stories.”
